At first the Heater would just continue to heat my tank way past 80. I soon learned through testing that I had to set it at 73 to make it 82-76, yes it has a 6 degree difference in temperature. Complete non sense as I paid good money for my 100w. I'm Going to go to my LFS and tell them about other reviews on this product, as they recommended it to me.

Want temp in the mid-upper 70's..... Heater stays on all the time until reaching 8284. Lower temp setting to 72.... Still heats to 84. I know its the heater as you can take it out and its hot.... heating even though tank is well over 80.

I have used Visi Therm heaters in the past with no problems. As wells many other Marineland products on all 7 of my tanks. But quality control must have been fired because the new ones are horrible.
I'll start From the beginning...
This past Saturday I went and bought a 75 watt heater for my 10 gallon tank. I know it's a bit overkill, but I'd rather have to much than not enough heating. I brought it home and put it in my tank over night. The next morning I plugged it in and went about my business letting the water heat up. Later once the tank was the right temp, I put my fry in their new home. The next Morning I woke up and the tank was 96 degrees. The T-stat was set on 77. I tried to turn it down think it just wasn't calibrated right but I could not get it to shut off. I promptly took it out of my tank and put my small back up heater in there to at least keep them from freezing or suffering stress from a fast drop in temp.
I called Marineland about the issue and she was very nice and understanding about it, but since I just bought it, I told her I would take it back to the store rather than her send another one to my house. I took it in and exchanged it for another one and it did the exact same thing. That evening I took #2 back and got a 50watt this time since thinking it was maybe a production issue with that batch.
The 50watt seemed to do the job at first, but no. It just took it a little longer to over heat my tank. I pulled it out when it hit 90 degrees.
3 heaters, 2 different wattage's and the exact same problem with all of them. After issues I had with a filter from them, and now heaters too? Someone needs to step up and restore the company name to what it was. Until then, They lost a loyal customer.

The quality control of Marineland submersible heaters leaves much to be desired.
We bought 2 - 250w submersible heaters for the same tank and 6 months later one works, one doesn't. This is the second time I've lost a Marineland heater in a year or less and it's the last. 50% doesn't cut it. Overall success rate for me, 33%.
