Hydroxyzine blocks histamine which causes allergic reactions. It also depresses the central nervous system which is why it can be used as a mild sedative for nervous dogs and cats.

Hydroxyzine is well tolerated by most animals. In some cases animals may have minor side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, nausea or vomiting, blurred vision or dry mouth.
